How to get around in Malta

Malta's small dimension make travelling across Malta easy and hassle free. The public transport system in Malta offers an efficient and convenient way of travelling. The bus service in Malta and Gozo is an efficient means to get around, since buses serve the major tourist areas. The bus station is located just outside Valletta; where one is able to catch a bus for all locations in Malta. Services are regular, and the popular routes run till 11pm, additionally  during the weekends buses are in service till late hour.
 
Car rental is another means of transportation in Malta. This may be the ideal means of transportation for one that wants to be independent and get to the farther reaches of the island. In Malta driving is on the left side (like the British) and all the signs are written in both, English and Maltese. National and international driving licenses are accepted and when renting a car, comprehensive insurance is advisable. Major international brands and local car hires are located in Malta and Gozo with daily rates of 16 to 28 Euro. The speed limit in Malta is 80km/h in open roads and 50km/h in districts.
If you prefer to catch a Taxi, the official white cabs are readily available in major population locations, but it is advised to book a cab in advance. It is also recommended to check in advance how costly a trip will be, even though white taxis are under meter charge at government-controlled prices. For airport transfers, it is recommended to use the local "Black cab" taxi firms since their rates are normally lower than the  white taxis and the drivers are smarter and more educated.
One may also opt to catch a ferry from Valletta to Sliema. Also you could find a regular ferry linking Malta and Gozo, taking approximately  20 minutes each way. There is a car and passenger service from Cirkewwa (northern Malta) to Mgarr (Gozo). The schedule changes according to the season and extra trips may be added according to demand, especially during summer time. There are also regular boat services between both Malta/Gozo and Comino, while a water taxi service using traditional Maltese 'dgħajsa' boats is also available in Grand Harbour.
If you like adventure, you can also try to catch the helicopter air link and enjoy the sightseeing flight over Malta and Gozo. Horse Drawn Carriages (karozzin) are also available in touristic location around the island, like Valletta, Sliema, St.julians or Mdina. It is always recommended to ask the coachman for rates of the various tours he offers before setting off. 
Cycling is another option to get around Malta, especially since all locations are in vicinity. However, cycling is less advisable due to the traffic and narrow roads. In addition, cycling in the intense summer heat can easily lead to dehydration
